Kentucky Man Files Lawsuit Alleging Viagra and Melanoma Link

A Kentucky man has filed a Viagra melanoma lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., alleging that the product caused the development of his melanoma, a serious and frequently deadly skin cancer. The plaintiff reportedly began to take Viagra in April 2009, and was diagnosed in late 2011 with melanoma. Lawsuits have been filed in Kentucky and other states that allege a link between Viagra and melanoma, and that the drug maker failed to disclose the risks associated with the drug.

Plaintiff Claims No Warning of Increased Risk of Viagra Causing Melanoma

The plaintiff indicated that he underwent surgery in October 2011 to have a cancerous mole removed, but the procedure did not eliminate the potential for the cancer to come back. According to the plaintiff, there were no indications or warnings on the Viagra label to notify patients of a relationship between Viagra and melanoma. The plaintiff alleges that Pfizer misrepresented the risks associated with the drug and failed to disclose information.

Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra has been prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in many men.
The link between Viagra and melanoma was noted in a 2014 study suggesting an 84 percent increased risk of melanoma in men taking Viagra, and the results have prompted Viagra lawsuits.

More than 25,000 men were involved in the study. While it is still unclear as to why an increased risk of developing melanoma may be a side effect of Viagra, some have theorized that the drug opens up genetic pathways that make the patient’s skin more vulnerable to the disease.
