Chemical Used in Study Known to be Safe in Treating Parkinson’s Disease

Treatment with a naturally occurring chemical called inosine may help promote fuller recovery of motor skills in brain injury victims, according to research published this month in the journal Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. As a press release on the study explains, researchers administered inosine treatments to four monkeys that had suffered brain damage in the parts of their brains that controlled their dominant hands. The researchers also gave four other monkeys placebos to treat the same injury. While the monkeys that took placebos had to learn a new way to grasp objects, three of the four monkeys that received inosine managed to regain their regular motor function.

These findings suggest that inosine may promote greater plasticity in the brain, allowing brain injury victims to recover motor function more effectively. Although no humans have undergone this treatment yet, inosine is known to be safe and offer benefits in treating Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. The findings suggest that further study into the effects of inosine on brain and spinal cord injury survivors could significantly benefit the victims of these injuries.
