Five Listeria Cases at Kansas Hospital Linked to Blue Bell Ice Cream

Investigators were reportedly first notified of a potential contamination issue when five patients were taken to a hospital in Kansas after having reportedly consumed milkshakes made with Blue Bell ice cream. By collecting various listeria strains, testing other Blue Bell ice cream products and running the results through a database of previous cases, investigators were able to link Blue Bell ice cream to past listeria cases.

According to The Guardian report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been collecting samples from people who were affected by listeria, but whose sicknesses were never linked to a particular product since 2004. The outbreak has now been linked to illnesses as early as 2010.

Blue Bell has acknowledged that, while it had performed regular tests on its products before shipping, after the most recent Blue Bell ice cream recall, it will be testing each batch before it ships. In a statement, the company reported that it will test every single product and held for release to consumers only after the tests conclude that that particular batch is safe. The company also has plans to expand its sanitation and cleaning system and invest in more comprehensive employee training.
