Report: School Bus Not Equipped With Seat Belts

Twenty-two students are recovering from the single vehicle accident involving the school bus. KSN reports that the bus, which wasn’t equipped with seat belts for riders, ran off the east side of US-73 highway, slid down a steep embankment and rolled one time, coming to rest on its wheels in a field. Immediately after the crash was reported, emergency personnel from various locations in northeast Kansas responded to the scene to treat the injured children and the driver. Ambulances took 21 students and the school bus driver to area hospitals. Some of the ambulances transported up to six students at a time but there are no reports of life-threatening injuries.

The November 2015 accident happened in the early morning hours and in all there were 40 students from the Hiawatha School District on board. The students ranged in age from high school down to elementary school ages. The bus rolled over after the driver was trying to make a left turn onto a highway and a preliminary investigation of the bus showed that the bus had no mechanical issues and that the crash reportedly occurred because the bus driver ignored the stop sign, a police official stated. It is unknown whether the bus driver will face any criminal charges, the website reported.
