Abbott Vascular is recalling NC Trek RX Coronary Dilatation Catheter and NC Traveler RX Coronary Dilatation Catheters because some balloons from the impacted lots may not deflate as intended, according to an announcement issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Use of the potentially defective devices may lead to serious health complications.

FDA: Recalled Catheters Could Lead to Serious Injury or Death
The NC TREK RX Coronary Dilatation Catheter is used in the balloon dilation of the abnormal narrowing portion of a coronary artery or bypass graft, the balloon dilatation of a coronary artery occlusion to restore coronary flow in patients who have had a myocardial infarction, and the balloon dilatation of a stent after implantation. The NC Traveler RX Coronary Dilatation Catheter is not cleared for commercial distribution in the United States.
According to the FDA, a defective catheter “may cause serious adverse health consequences,” including:
- prolonged cardiac ischemia (reduced blood flow to the heart)
- air embolism
- thrombosis (clot in the artery)
- myocardial infarction (heart attack)
In some cases, additional surgery could be needed to alleviate that could lead to post-operative complications, including death. At the time of the FDA’s announcement, Abbott Vascular had received 13 complaints related to the issue, and one death had been reported.
