Exmark has issued a recall for 5,300 riding lawn mowers, following reports that claim the equipment’s steering assembly may fail, causing operators to lose steering control. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the Exmark mower recall on May 15, 2014 after the agency received nine incident reports of the Quest ZRT riding lawn mowers losing steering ability due to a malfunction in the assembly. To date, the agency has reported at least one back injury.

The Exmark mower recall involves Exmark Quest ZRT riding lawn mowers from the 2009 and 2010 model years with model numbers:

  • QST24BE522 with a 52-inch mowing deck
  • QST22BE482 with a 48-inch mowing deck
  • QST20BE422 with a 42-inch mowing deck

The equipment included in the Exmark mower recall are gray and red and have “Quest” printed on the front and “Exmark” printed on the side. Serial and model numbers can be found on a metal plate mounted on the left hand side behind the seat.

The mowers in the Exmark mower recall were manufactured under Exmark Manufacturing Co., Inc. of Beatrice, Nebraska, where they were sold at rental equipment, lawn and garden and hardware stores throughout the country for between $4,600 and $6,000 from April 2009 through October 2010.

The CPSC has advised consumers to stop using the affected mowers and contact Exmark for information on how to obtain a free repair. This was not the first Exmark mower recall as the company pulled 2,200 2009 and 2010 Quest ZRT lawn mowers in May 2012 due to the potential for the bearings which support the decks on the mowers to fail, causing the deck to interfere with the operator’s controls and increasing the risk of a crash.
