Data Breach May Have Allowed Hackers to Gather Credit Card and Other Information from OXO Customers
International cooking tool and houseware brand OXO has reported a series of attacks on its e-commerce website that potentially exposed the personal contact and credit card information of its customers. OXO has issued two data breach notification letters informing customers that their name, billing and shipping information, and credit card information may have been compromised. The breach affects customers who used OXO’s online shopping cart to purchase products directly from the company. It is not reported to affect customers who purchased OXO products from other retail outlets.

The OXO website may have been hit with more than one type of attack and could have been hit by more than one bad actor. Security researcher Lawrence Abrams compared the information available on the attack to other publicized shopping cart attacks, including recent breaches of British Airways, Ticketmaster, and Newegg. Abrams claims that at least one of the OXO compromises was likely a MageCart attack, which inserted malicious computer code into the checkout page of the OXO website. This code copied customers’ information as it was being transmitted to OXO and sent the copy to a separate location where hackers could access it from anywhere in the world.
Who was Affected in the OXO Breach?
Investigation into the potential OXO data breach is ongoing, and the individuals affected by vulnerabilities in the OXO website may not have all been identified. Initially, OXO estimated that the incident occurred between July 1 and October 1, 2018. Its first notification letter stated that OXO “immediately took steps to identify and remediate the security issue” following its discovery on October 1, 2018. A later release from the company stated that the breach continued past October 1.

OXO has announced that customers who entered information on its website between June 9 – November 28, 2017, June 8 – June 9, 2018, and July 20 – October 16, 2018, may have had their personal and financial information compromised. The company reported to State Attorneys General that it has notified its customers affected by the breach and offered them free identity monitoring services.
How an OXO Data Breach Attorney Can Help
If you received a notice that you may be a victim of the OXO data breach or if you suspect you may be affected by the breach, your personal and financial information may be at risk. When financial information is hacked, that information may be used by malicious parties to purchase items using your credit card, open new credit accounts using your information, or commit other forms of identity theft. Depending on the information stolen by hackers, you may also be at risk of having a fraudulent tax return filed or having loans issued in your name.

If you are a victim of a data breach, you may be entitled to receive compensation for any personal information that may have been compromised, and the responsible party may be liable for financial losses resulting from a data breach. Affected consumers should seek legal counsel from an OXO data breach lawsuit attorney to get more information about their rights and remedies.
