Takata Airbag Update: Recall May Expand To More Cars

In a Takata airbag update, seven more automakers could be facing recalls because they use airbags made by the Takata Corporation, according to letters they received last week from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Defective airbag attorneys note that eight fatal accidents have been linked so far to Takata airbags.

U.S. Safety Agency Expects Scope of Recall to Expand

According to wsj.com, the NHTSA sent letters to Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar-Land Rover, Suzuki Motor Corporation, Tesla, Volvo Trucks, Volkswagen AG and Spartan Motors Inc. seeking information on which models have Takata airbags.

The NHTSA is preparing for an October 22, 2015, public meeting in Washington, D.C., to discuss a continuing investigation into Takata and whether the agency will take over management of all the recalls to speed up repairs. As of September 1, 2015, only 4.4 million airbags had been replaced as automakers have had to scramble to get parts, the website reported.

The recent global recall of Takata airbags began in 2008 when Honda Motor Co. recalled approximately 4,000 Accords and Civics over concerns that the airbags could rupture and explode metal fragments into the vehicles. Since then, more than 19.2 million U.S. vehicles have been recalled by more than 11 automakers because of injuries and deaths linked to Takata airbags.
