Nexium and acute interstitial nephritis lawsuits may be an option for patients who used the medication to treat acid reflux disease and suffered from serious side effects associated with the medication, including acute interstitial nephritis, or AIN. Affected patients and their families may be eligible to seek compensation with the help of a Nexium lawsuit attorney.

What is Nexium and How Does It Work?
Nexium, also known as esomeprazole and “the purple pill,” is a medication approved for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and for patients with H. pylori infection. Nexium is also used to treat gastric ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which pancreatic tumors secrete large amounts of gastrin and causes the stomach to produce too much stomach acid.
Nexium is a type of drug known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which block the production of acid in the stomach. Nexium works to relieve symptoms associated with heartburn and helps to heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus. Nexium also helps to prevent ulcers and may prevent cancer in the esophagus.
Nexium and Acute Interstitial Nephritis
Acute Interstitial Nephritis (AIN) is a condition in which the spaces between the kidney tubules become inflamed or swollen. Although AIN is typically a temporary condition, it can lead to more severe kidney problems such as acute kidney failure.
Symptoms of AIN include:
- Blood in the urine
- Fever
- Increased or decreased urine output
- Drowsiness or confusion
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rash
- Swelling of the body
- Weight gain from retaining fluid
There are many potential causes of AIN, including side effects associated with the use of PPIs such as Nexium. According to research published in the peer-reviewed medical journal BMC Nephrology, previous publications have suggested an association between the use of PPIs and AIN. According to the article, numerous biopsy-confirmed case reports and retrospective descriptive reports have been published suggesting a connection between PPI use and AIN, including research published in 2006 citing three cases of esomeprazole-associated AIN.
Additionally, the New England Journal of Medicine Journal Watch released information in 2006 about a case series and literature review that indicated and association between all five commercially available PPIs, including Nexium, and the development of AIN. Although many of those patients experienced some recovered renal function, some retained a degree of renal impairment.
Nexium Side Effects
Less serious side effects of Nexium include:
- Headache
- Drowsiness
- Mild diarrhea
- Nausea, stomach pain, gas, or constipation
- Dry mouth
Use of Nexium may cause magnesium levels in the body to drop. Symptoms associated with low magnesium include:
- Dizziness or confusion
- Fast or irregular heart rate
- Jerking muscle movements
- Jittery feeling
- Watery or bloody diarrhea
- Muscle cramps or weakness
- Cough or choking feeling
- Seizure (convulsions)
Other Nexium Risks
Other risks and serious side effects have been associated with the use of Nexium to treat acid reflux disease. If a patient experiences problems associated with serious kidney conditions such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), or kidney failure, they are advised to contact their doctor or healthcare professional immediately. Complications of these diseases may lead to dialysis, kidney transplant, or death.
How Nexium and Acute Interstitial Nephritis Lawsuits Can Help
Drug makers have a duty to provide safe products. If there are risks of harm associated with their products, they also must provide adequate warnings. If a drug maker fails to fulfill this duty, it could be held liable in lawsuits for injuries that may result.
People injured by the Nexium may be eligible to recover money for:
- Medical Expenses
- Lost Wages
- Pain and Suffering
The families of those who have died may be eligible to recover money for funeral expenses and the pain that comes with losing a loved one.
