Paxil lawsuit attorneys note that claims are being pursued against drug maker GlaxoSmithKline alleging severe side effects, including birth defects, suicidal tendencies, and extreme withdrawal complications, caused by the antidepressant medication. More Paxil lawsuits are expected as patients experience injuries after taking the drug, bad drug attorneys note.

What is Paxil?

Paxil is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and is used to treat depression, obsessivecompulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Paxil in 1992 for the treatment of depression.

Paxil Suicide Risks

In 2004, the FDA required all antidepressant manufacturers to add a black box to the label warning about an increased risk of suicidal tendencies in children and teenagers who take antidepressants. Later, in 2007, the FDA expanded the scope of its warning to include young adults up to the age of 24. Paxil is included in this FDA black box requirement.

Paxil Lawsuits and Birth Defects

In a study of more than 3,500 pregnant women, Paxil was linked to twice as many major birth defects as other antidepressants, according to the FDA.  Mothers who took Paxil during pregnancy have a higher risk of suffering serious birth defects like persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), septal heart defects, or other malformations. In July 2006, the FDA issued a health advisory advising people of the serious side effects of taking SNRI/SSRIs while pregnant. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that showed mothers who took SNRIs such as Paxil, had a higher risk of giving birth to babies with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN). Babies exposed to Pristiq during gestation also suffer withdrawal symptoms such as incessant crying, agitation and sleeplessness.  Paxil birth defects may include the following:

  • Clubfoot
  • Cleft lip or palate
  • Septal heart defects
  • Blindness
  • Down syndrome
  • Other birth defects

Injured Patients May Be Entitled to Compensation

Drug makers have a duty to provide safe drugs. If there are risks of harm associated with their drugs, they also must provide adequate warnings. If a drug maker fails to fulfill this duty, it could be held liable in lawsuits for injuries that may result.

Patients who are injured by Paxil may be entitled to compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish
  • Loss of income or ability to work

If a patient dies from complications after taking Paxil, family members may be entitled to compensation for the wrongful death of their loved one, including:

  • Conscious pain and suffering of a loved one prior to death
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish from the loss of a loved one
  • Funeral expenses

Patients who have suffered severe side effects after taking Paxil, as well as the families of those who have died as a result of complications with the drug, are encouraged to seek the advice of a Paxil lawsuit attorney to learn more about their rights and remedies.
