Zofran Linked to Cleft Palate?
Zofran, or Ondanestron, is a medication approved by the FDA as a treatment for nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy and surgery patients. As of March 2015, it was not approved as a treatment for morning sickness, although GSK allegedly promoted Zofran for that purpose and failed to disclose risks of birth defects.
Studies suggest that Zofran may be able to cross the placenta and expose the fetus directly to the medication. According to studies, exposure to Zofran, particularly during the first trimester, can cause severe birth defects.
A study published by the National Institute of Health investigated the possible link between Zofran and cleft palate and cleft lip. Researchers used data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) to evaluate whether treatments for morning sickness could be linked to non-cardiovascular birth defects like cleft palate or cleft lip.
The study reportedly noted an increased risk of cleft palate by a 2.37-to-1 ratio for pregnant women who took Zofran. Cleft palate, or oral clefts, typically occur in early pregnancy and develop when there is a lack of tissue in the mouth for it to properly grow together. The condition results in a split or a hole in the roof of the child’s mouth and may cause difficulty eating and talking. In some cases, it can increase the risk of other health problems, including ear infections, and requires corrective surgery to fix.
Zofran Cleft Palate Lawsuits
According to claims against GlaxoSmithKline, the company knew or should have known that taking the medication in early pregnancy increased the risk of birth defects, including cleft palate. Other allegations include that the drug maker wrongfully promoted Zofran for the off-label purpose of treating morning sickness and failed to disclose the risks of birth defects to pregnant women. Zofran Lawsuits have been filed seeking compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, and other damages.
