In the early 2000’s, metal-on-metal hip and other joint replacements promised to improve the durability and performance for patients. Unfortunately, for many people these joint replacements proved to be defective and dangerous. The DePuy ASR was recalled in August 2010 after data from several countries suggested that the metal on metal hips were failing at very high rates in people who had them implanted for less than five years. Depuy ASR hip recall attorneys are working to help patients who have suffered injury and are at risk for greater injury in the future.

DePuy Metal Hip Recalls
Two models of hips sold in the US have been recalled, the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Hip System. It is not known exactly how many were sold in the US, but hip replacement lawyers and DePuy estimate that over 30,000 people in the US may have these models of hip replacement.

Unfortunately, the danger of these hip replacements is not limited to the affected joint. As the metal-on-metal joint decays, it sheds metal fragments that include chromium and other toxic heavy metals. In the tissue around the implant, these metal fragments cause swelling, pain, and tissue death. However, these metal fragments can also be spread throughout the body and cause neurological damage and blindness.
This danger is not limited to DePuy ASR hips. Case studies have shown that this danger may be common to all types of metal-on-metal joint replacements. Stryker hip replacement attorneys have learned that similar dangers affect people who received Stryker hip replacements recalled in July 2012.
