NHTSA: 2018 Saw Slight Increase in Fatal Large Truck Accidents

Like other types of motor vehicle accidents, large truck accidents can be devastating, often leaving those involved seriously injured as a result of the accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 5,000 people were killed in large truck accidents on U.S. roadways in 2018, an increase of 1 percent from the previous year. Although traffic fatalities overall have decreased in the past few years, fatal accidents involving large trucks continue to rise.

Large Truck Accidents Likely to Occur on Interstates and in Rural Areas

In addition to the nearly 5,000 people killed, approximately 151,000 people were injured in large truck accidents in 2018. Seventy-one percent of those killed and 72 percent of those injured were occupants of other vehicles. When compared with other types of drivers (such as those operating passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and light trucks), large truck drivers who were involved in fatal accidents had a higher percentage of previously recorded crashes.

Many of these accidents are occurring on our nation’s interstates where drivers are likely to drive at higher speeds and on rural roadways where road conditions tend to be more hazardous. The NHTSA also noted that large trucks were “more likely to be involved in fatal multiple-vehicle crashes as opposed to fatal single-vehicle crashes than were passenger vehicles.” Regardless of the number of vehicles involved, fatal and non-fatal accidents involving large trucks can be especially traumatic due to the sometimes violent nature of accidents involving big rigs, semi trucks, and other large vehicles.
