Urges to Gamble, Binge Eat and Shop Excessively Among FDA’s Warnings

In the May 2016 safety announcement issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency stated that it had received 184 reports of impulse-control disorders since Abilify was approved in 2002. These compulsions included uncontrollable urges to gamble, binge eat, shop excessively, and have sex. The uncontrollable urges were reported to have stopped when the drug, aripiprazole (Abilify, Abilify Maintena, Aristada, and generics), was discontinued or the dose was reduced, the agency reported.

Potential Abilify Side Effects

  • Spending or shopping excessively
  • Binge eating
  • Compulsive gambling
  • Unusual sexual appetite

Lawsuits have been filed alleging that Abilify is also linked to compulsive gambling and other compulsive behaviors, which have resulted in substantial financial, mental, and physical damages to patients who have taken the drug. Additionally, patients claim that drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka Pharmaceutical, sellers of Abilify, knew or should have known that Abilify, when taken as prescribed and intended, causes and contributes to an increased risk of serious and dangerous side effects.

The FDA cautions that patients and caregivers should be alert for uncontrollable and excessive urges and behaviors while taking Abilify and patients should not suddenly stop taking the medication without first talking to their health care professional.

How an Abilify Side Effects Attorney Can Help

Drug makers have a duty to provide safe products. If there are risks of harm associated with their products, they also must provide adequate warnings. If a drug maker fails to fulfill this duty, it could be held liable in lawsuits for injuries that may result.

People injured by Abilify may be eligible to recover money for:

  • Medical Expenses
  • Lost Wages

The families of those who have died may be eligible to recover money for funeral expenses and the pain that comes with losing a loved one.
