Reports Indicate Landing Gear Failed Prior to Airplane Crash

Initial reports indicate that a small plane’s landing gear failed to engage prior to a fatal crash that occurred on a freeway near San Diego, California. Witnesses reported that the plane appeared to be in distress prior to striking a car pulled over on the freeway, but whether it was experiencing mechanical failure at the time of the crash has not been determined. According to NBC News, a man who believes that at one time he owned the plane involved in the crash said he, too, once had to make an emergency landing on the same strip of road. These claims have not, to date, been substantiated.

The accident claimed the life of one passenger in the car and sent three other passengers to the hospital with injuries ranging in severity. The two riding in the single-engine, fixed-wing airplane were also transported to the hospital after suffering serious injuries, with the pilot receiving treatment for life-threating head wounds. Further investigation into the accident will likely reveal whether the pilot failed to deploy the landing gear for some reason or other or if it failed to deploy because of a problem with the aircraft, the website reported.
