FAA: Mechanical or Aircraft Issues Not to Blame in Crashes-More Pilot Training Urged

In light of a series of airplane crashes, injuries and deaths, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning to all air operators in Alaska regarding their safety protocols and operating procedures. As Alaska Dispatch News reports, since 2015, 24 passengers aboard commuter or commercial flights in Alaska have suffered severe or fatal injuries during plane crashes. Virtually all of these incidents have been deemed preventable.

According to the FAA, all of the accidents occurred when pilots unwittingly flew into ground that was flat or rising. None of the crashes involved mechanical failures or other plane-related issues. Many of the crashes apparently happened when pilots moved into conditions of low visibility and failed to turn around or use their navigational instruments. Although the FAA has not issued new guidelines or requirements to local air carriers, it has recommended that carriers start focusing on training pilots to use instrument navigation and adjust more quickly to low-visibility conditions, the website reported.
