Car Maker Reportedly Installed Devices After Separate Diesel Scandal Came to Light

Audi is being sued over allegations that certain diesel-engine vehicles, including the A6, A8, Q5 and Q7, were manufactured with software that enabled those vehicles to cheat emissions tests without consumers’ knowledge. According to Law360.com, the lead plaintiff in the case claims that the vehicle he purchased was equipped with a “defeat device” meant to decrease emissions while increasing fuel efficiency during testing, but not while the car was being used by consumers.

The lawsuit comes as a California judge gave final approval to a $14.7 billion settlement with consumers and the federal government over an emission’s cheating scandal by Volkswagen, Audi’s parent company. Volkswagen’s scheme was exposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board in September 2015, two agencies who accused the company of deliberately installing defeat devices in some diesel vehicles.
