Byetta is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs to those living with type 2 diabetes. In fact, statistics show that over 7 million prescriptions were filled for the drug in 2008 alone. However, serious concerns about the safety of Byetta have been raised, and plaintiffs across the country are filing claims with the help of a lawyer, alleging that the drug caused pancreatic cancer as well as thyroid and liver cancers.
While more serious side effects include cancers of the pancreas, liver and thyroid, plaintiffs have also allegedly developed pancreatitis and suffered from kidney failure while taking the drug. Less severe side effects include fever, nausea and abdominal pain. If you have experienced one or more of these conditions, contact a Byetta lawyer to learn more about filing a claim and recovering compensation for your injuries.
According to adverse event reports submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), between 2005 and 2008, the agency received 78 complaints of kidney damage from Byetta users as well as 62 claims of kidney failure. In 2007 alone, 30 cases of acute pancreatitis were submitted to the FDA from patients taking Byetta.
Two years later, a highly regarded medical journal published that Byetta and other GLP-1 medications may cause abnormalities in the pancreas that can lead to pancreatic cancer. In 2011, Gastroenterology, a medical journal, published a clinical trial that determined that those taking Januvia and Byetta were six times more likely to develop acute pancreatitis than those taking other medications. The study also found an increased risk of thyroid cancer and that those taking Byetta were 2.9 times more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The FDA allegedly received over 38,730 cases of adverse events in Byetta users in 2012, 1,733 of which claimed that the patients suffered from pancreatitis. According to court documents, Byetta may have caused more than 375 deaths. Most recently, JAMA Internal Medicine published a study that reported that, of 1,269 participants with type 2 diabetes, 145 individuals developed pancreatitis. Furthermore, 87 of these patients were taking Januvia or Byetta to manage their type 2 diabetes condition.
