Study: Average Driver Remains Distracted For 27 Seconds After Using Voice-Activated Technologies

Hands-free technology in vehicles has become increasingly popular in recent years, but a 2015 study released by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety suggests that these voice-activated systems aren’t as safe as many people think. According to UpMatters, AAA reports that the human mind remains distracted for an average of 27 seconds after using voice-activated technologies, such as changing the radio station, requesting directions or dialing a phone number using audible commands.

The study suggests that distracted driving behaviors can occur even when one’s hands are both on the steering wheel. However, just how long a motorist remains distracted depends to some degree on the type of voice-activated system used and how familiar a user is with the device.  Even when using the top-ranked, least-distracting voice-activated systems, drivers typically remained distracted for a period of about 15 seconds, considerably increasing their risk of a distracted-driving related accident. The study also revealed that drivers who were particularly familiar with a system were slightly less susceptible to distraction, although some degree of risk still remained, the website reported.
