Cigarettes Linked to Asbestos Come to the Attention of Attorneys

Cigarettes linked to asbestosIt may be difficult to think of another chemical or substance that could make cigarettes more hazardous than they already are, but in the 1950s, certain brands of cigarettes were manufactured with asbestos-filled filters. Although most asbestos-related illnesses are caused by certain workplace environments including mines, construction sites, railways, navy shipyards, and furnaces, cigarettes linked to asbestos have been the subject of several lawsuits in which plaintiffs allege asbestosis disease and mesothelioma. In certain cases, plaintiffs may be eligible to hold more than one party accountable for their condition and recover additional compensation for their injuries.

If you or a loved one were diagnosed with mesothelioma or asbestosis and you feel that cigarettes may be to blame, Attorney Group can help answer your questions and help you understand your legal rights. Cigarettes Linked to Asbestos Risk

According to several lawsuits, plaintiffs who either worked in the factory that supplied the filters or those who smoked the cigarettes in question allegedly developed serious and life-threatening health complications such as mesothelioma. Victims who allegedly developed asbestosis lung disease due to exposure to asbestos fibers have filed other lawsuits.

According to an article published on September 19, 2013 in the Daily Business Review, a man was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2012. The plaintiff claims that it was Kent cigarettes that allegedly caused the condition as these cigarettes reportedly used an asbestos-filled filter. Also included as defendants in the lawsuit include the manufacturer of the filters used in the cigarettes and the paper mill company where the man was employed.

A jury found the manufacturer of the filters and the cigarette maker, Lorillard, 22 percent responsible, each, for the plaintiff’s condition. The paper company was 16 percent responsible, and other defendants were apportioned with the remaining 40 percent of the blame. In total, the plaintiff received $8 million for his condition, and Lorillard paid $3.52 million resulting from an indemnity agreement between the company and the manufacturer of the filter.

Plaintiffs File Lawsuits Over Cigarettes Linked to Asbestos, Other Allegations

Asbestos lawsuits have been in process for many years, with plaintiffs filing claims against manufacturers and employers after being diagnosed with mesothelioma and other health complications. In many cases, however, it is often difficult to determine exactly how much manufacturers and employers are to be held accountable for the conditions allegedly caused by their actions and products.

If you or a loved one received a mesothelioma diagnosis or you feel that cigarettes linked to asbestos was the cause of your condition, it is important to seek legal counsel in order to determine who should be held responsible for your injury. In some cases, much like the lawsuit in which cigarettes linked to asbestos caused plaintiffs harm, both the manufacturer of the cigarettes and the maker of the filters may be liable.

For this reason, it is crucial to seek legal counsel to ensure your rights are protected and that you receive the compensation to which you are entitled. While every case is different and no settlement amount is guaranteed, you may be eligible to recover monetary damages for lost wages, loss of income, pain and suffering, mental anguish and any medical expenses you might have incurred including cancer treatments, chemotherapy, radiation and other procedures required to help combat the disease.
