FDA: High Doses of Imodium May Lead to Fatal Heart Issues

An Imodium side effects lawyer notes that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that excessive doses of the antidiarrheal drug may lead to serious heart problems and even death. The FDA’s caution for the drug known generically as Loperamide and sold under the brand name Imodium, applies to both over-the-counter and prescription strength medications, which are sold under other generic names. Affected patients and their families may be eligible to file a lawsuit and recover compensation for their injuries with the assistance of a bad drugs attorney.

Report: Ten Fatalities Reported to the FDA Since Drug’s Approval

According to cnn.com, the June 2016 safety announcement issued by the FDA stated that the majority of reported serious heart problems occurred in people who were intentionally misusing and abusing high doses of Loperamide in attempts to self-treat opioid withdrawal symptoms or to achieve a feeling of euphoria and they were combining the drug with interacting drugs in attempts to increase these effects.

Forty-eight cases of serious heart problems associated with Imodium have been reported to the FDA between 1976, when the drug was approved, and 2015. This includes 10 fatalities. However, the agency believes the actual number of cases is higher because not all incidents are reported to the FDA.

Calls to poison control centers about intentional exposure of this drug increased 71% from 2011 to 2014 nationwide, according to the American College of Emergency Physicians. It also found that online postings about abuse of loperamide increased tenfold from 2010 to 2011. Most of the postings were about self-treatment for withdrawal symptoms, while taking it to get high was also commonly mentioned, the website reports.

The FDA urges patients, consumers, and health care professionals to report side effects involving the drug to the FDA MedWatch program.
