GI Bleeding Risk in Older Patients May Be Higher For Xarelto Than Warfarin

Xarelto attorneys note a study published in April 2015 by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that compared the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding for warfarin with that of Xarelto (rivaroxaban) and showed that older patients who take Xarelto may have an increased risk of GI bleeding compared to those who take warfarin.

Studies: GI Bleeding Among Severe Xarelto Side Effects

According to the BMJ study, “a pattern of elevation of risk of gastrointestinal bleeding with advancing age was observed in patients prescribed rivaroxaban (compared with warfarin).” The study found that the risk of GI bleeding for atrial fibrillation patients ages 76 and over was higher for those taking Xarelto than for those taking warfarin. A similar increase in risk was shown in non-atrial fibrillation patients over 75 who take Xarelto.

GI bleeding is included in a number of severe bleeding side effects that have been alleged in Xarelto lawsuits filed against drug makers Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Healthcare. Patients claim that the companies failed to disclose the potentially life-threatening risks associated with Xarelto, and that the product is defective because no antidote exists to reverse potential bleeding.

Injured Patients May Be Entitled to Compensation

Drug makers have a duty to make drugs that are safe for patients. If a medication poses a serious health risk, warnings must be provided so that patients can make an informed decision before taking a drug. Failure to provide these warnings can cause a drug maker to be liable for injuries caused by the drug.

A patient who suffers injury, including internal bleeding after taking Xarelto, may be entitled to compensation as a result of that injury. Compensation may include pain and suffering, medical expenses, mental anguish, income losses, and other damages. If a loved one dies from complications after taking Xarelto, family members may be able to pursue wrongful death compensation on behalf of the deceased loved one. Wrongful death damages can include medical expenses that can be attributed to the fatal injury, and pain, suffering, and mental anguish resulting from the loss of a loved one.
