Report: Previous Episodes of Negligence and Substandard Care Alleged at Nursing Home

Massachusetts health officials and family members of patients at Wilmington’s Woodbriar Health Center are expressing concerns about a lack of communication from facility representatives related to a recent scabies outbreak. According to the Boston Globe, a state surveyor was sent to assess the situation at the nursing home in an unusual move suggesting there had been earlier complaints about the incident. Scabies is highly contagious and can be transmitted through clothes, bedding or direct contact with the skin of an infected individual.

While the scabies outbreak may affect the residents of Woodbriar’s dementia unit, it is the latest in a long line of concerns voiced about the overall conditions at the facility. One resident died several months ago after she was allegedly dropped while being transported from her bed to a wheel chair. Additionally, the facility has faced a number of other troubling allegations, among them charges of improperly administering medications, failing to adequately train staff members and letting patient’s pressure sores fester, the website reported.

How a Nursing Home Injury Attorney Can Help

Nursing home owners and operators have a duty to provide for the care and safety of their residents. If they allow residents to suffer nursing home abuse or neglect, they could be held liable in a nursing home neglect lawsuit for injuries that may result.

Residents who are injured though abuse or neglect may be entitled to compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • The permanency of the injury
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish
  • Scarring or disfigurements caused by an injury or treatment for the injury

If a resident dies as a result of nursing home abuse or neglect, family members may be entitled to compensation for the wrongful death of their loved one.

Families should consider seeking the advice of a nursing home injury attorney to learn more about the possibility of pursuing a nursing home neglect lawsuit in order to seek compensation for the death or injury of their loved one.
