Report: Driver Allegedly Fell Asleep at the Wheel

A family has reached a $27.5 million settlement with Sanderson Farms for injuries they suffered in a truck accident that occurred when one of the company’s drivers allegedly fell asleep on the job. According to The Waco Tribune-Herald, the crash occurred when the truck rear-ended the family’s vehicle, which was stopped and waiting to turn onto another road. Although the trucker offered various initial explanations for the accident, he had been working lengthy and irregular hours the week before the crash, and he reportedly admitted to his girlfriend that he had drifted off when the accident occurred.

The truck was allegedly traveling at over 50 miles per hour when it struck the family’s vehicle and caused serious injuries to two of the occupants. The mother suffered a compound fracture and other injuries, while her youngest child, who was just two weeks old, sustained extensive brain trauma, a skull fracture and a collapsed lung. Tragically, the child is now expected to live with incapacitating brain damage for the rest of his life, the website reported.

How a Truck Injury Lawyer Can Help

Truck drivers and trucking companies have a duty to make sure that they operate and maintain their vehicles in a safe manner. If this duty is not fulfilled, a semi-truck accident may occur, and the truck driver or trucking company can be held liable for injuries that may result.

Drivers or passengers who are injured in a truck accident may be entitled to compensation for damages resulting from their injuries, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages
  • Scarring and disfigurement

The families of those killed may be eligible to recover money for funeral expenses and the pain that comes with losing a loved one.

People who have been injured in a truck accident are advised to seek the advice of an experienced truck injury lawyer to help them protect their legal rights.
