Report: Device Maker Still Faces 44,000 TVM Lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits involving its Ethicon transvaginal mesh (TVM) implants, which allegedly causes some users to suffer severe injuries by shrinking or eroding. Thousands of women who allegedly suffered serious injuries after receiving transvaginal mesh implants manufactured by Johnson & Johnson are reportedly receiving settlements in a January 2016 deal, according to Bloomberg. The women claim that Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon transvaginal mesh units deteriorated or shrank after implantation, causing the women to suffer constant pain, organ damage and other serious injuries. The settlement, which has a total value of $120 million, is expected to resolve between 2,000 and 3,000 cases.

Since 2011, over 100,000 women have filed lawsuits against various manufacturers for injuries that they allegedly suffered after receiving defective transvaginal mesh products. In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked several of these manufacturers, including Johnson & Johnson, to study rates of complications from transvaginal mesh implants. The same year, Johnson & Johnson agreed to remove some of its Ethicon products from the market. Since then, the company hasn’t taken significant steps to resolve the legal claims involving these products. Even after the recent settlement, Johnson & Johnson still faces over 44,000 transvaginal mesh injury lawsuits, the website reported.
