Mother of Crash Victims Urges Semi Safety Guard Review

A truck crash attorney notes that a mother of two truck accident victims believes that stronger semi-truck safety guard standards are necessary in order to save the lives of motorists and passengers. The woman is petitioning the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to make highway safety rules based on safety and not on cost. Report: Two Teenagers Died When Semi’s Safety Guard Failed

Whether stronger underride guards on a tractor trailer truck would have saved the lives of two teenagers is unknown, but their mother is making strides to see that her children’s deaths weren’t in vain. Underride guards are the metal barriers affixed to the back of most semi-trucks, according to Time-Warner Cable News New York. The underride guards are supposed to prevent other motorists from traveling beneath the truck in the event of a collision, but the teens’ mother said they failed to do so in the instance.

The family of the accident victims has raised money for research into the safety and effectiveness of these underride guards, and it also created a petition urging the DOT to review its safety standards regarding them. A 17-year-old and a 13-year-old both lost their lives in the crash, which occurred when one semi-truck collided with their car, sending it underneath another truck, and the mother and her family have channeled their grief by advocating for better highway and truck safety, the news agency reported.

How a Truck Crash Attorney Can Help

Truck drivers and trucking companies have a duty to make sure that they operate and maintain their vehicles in a safe manner. If this duty is not fulfilled, a tractor trailer accident may occur, and the truck driver or trucking company can be held liable for injuries that may result.

Drivers or passengers who are injured in a tractor trailer accident may be entitled to compensation for damages resulting from their injuries, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of ability to earn
  • Scarring and disfigurement

If a driver or passenger is killed in a tractor trailer accident, his or her family members may be able to pursue compensation for the wrongful death of their loved one. Wrongful death damages can include:

  • Medical expenses incurred prior to death
  • Conscious pain and suffering prior to death
  • Loss of the economic support of the loved one
  • Loss of the companionship of the loved one
  • Funeral expenses

People who have been injured in a trucking accident are advised to seek the advice of an experienced truck crash attorney to help them protect their legal rights.
