Report: Five Nursing Students Died in Fiery Crash

The employer of a truck driver who is alleged to have fatally injured five Georgia Southern University nursing students when he rear-ended the vehicles that they were traveling in has agreed to settle the wrongful death lawsuits brought by the surviving family members of the victims. The families of four of the students have reached settlements with the company, according to WBTW News. The family of the fifth victim is still negotiating the terms of a settlement.

The truck driver reportedly admitted fault in the multi-vehicle crash, which occurred during stop-and-go traffic and left two other nursing students injured. However, the reason that the trucker failed to see the traffic jam ahead and reduce his speed is still unknown. The driver maintains that his collision warning system never alerted him to the slowed traffic that he was approaching. The driver also contends that he was awake at the time of the crash, even though he was terminated from a previous position for falling asleep while driving, the website reported.

How a Trucking Injury Lawyer Can Help

Truck drivers and trucking companies have a duty to make sure that they operate and maintain their vehicles in a safe manner. If this duty is not fulfilled, a semi truck accident may occur, and the truck driver or trucking company can be held liable for injuries that may result.

Drivers or passengers who are injured in a semi truck accident may be entitled to compensation for damages resulting from their injuries, including:

  • Medical Expenses
  • Lost Wages
  • Pain and Suffering

The families of those killed may be eligible to recover money for funeral expenses and the pain that comes with losing a loved one.
