Tylenol and Liver Damage

According to Harvard Medical School, doctors have long known that large doses of acetaminophen could cause liver failure, but it was not known that the drug could lead to liver failure even in small doses until 2009. At that time, a group of experts known as the Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity Working Group made recommendations to the United States Food and Drug Administration regarding changes to the usage of the drug.

Although the FDA did lower the recommended daily dosage for acetaminophen, it did not make sweeping changes to usage recommendations. The use of acetaminophen is especially dangerous for heavy drinkers as both alcohol and acetaminophen are processed through the liver. In some people, acute liver damage has occurred with doses as low as 5,000 mg, which is very close the FDA recommended daily dosage of 4,000 mg, leading some who have suffered liver damage after taking small amounts of the drug to file a Tylenol liver failure lawsuit.

Bellwether Case Timeline

According to documents filed in the Pennsylvania court, The following is a timeline of events leading up to the selection of the Tylenol liver failure lawsuit:

  • Aug. 12-29, 2010: Deceased in the lawsuit took Extra Strength Tylenol with 500mg of acetaminophen
  • Aug. 31, 2010: The deceased died of acute liver failure allegedly because of using the Tylenol
  • Dec. 31, 2012: Bellwether case is filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas
  • April 1, 2013: All Tylenol cases are combined into an MDL in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
  • Dec. 15, 2014: The former Philadelphia County case is selected as the Bellwether case for the MDL.
