At that time, a group of experts known as the Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity Working Group made recommendations to the United States Food and Drug Administration regarding changes to the usage of the drug.
Although the FDA did lower the recommended daily dosage for acetaminophen, it did not make sweeping changes to usage recommendations. The use of acetaminophen is especially dangerous for heavy drinkers as both alcohol and acetaminophen are processed through the liver. In some people, acute liver damage has occurred with doses as low as 5,000 mg, which is very close the FDA recommended daily dosage of 4,000 mg, leading some who have suffered liver damage after taking small amounts of the drug to file a Tylenol liver failure lawsuit.
