Viagra Death Alleged in Lawsuit

A Minnesota woman has filed a Viagra death lawsuit against Pfizer, Inc., alleging that the drug caused her husband to develop melanoma that caused his death. According to the plaintiff, her husband first took Viagra in 1998 to treat erectile dysfunction and continued to take it regularly. In 2009, the man received a diagnosis of late-stage malignant melanoma before he died in April 2012. Other Viagra lawsuits have been filed alleging that Pfizer failed to disclose the risks associated with the drug.

Study Shows Viagra Melanoma Risk

A study in April 2014 by the Journal of the American Medical Association examined the potential link between Viagra and melanoma. Researchers looked at more than 25,000 participants who used sildenafil citrate, Viagra’s active ingredient, and showed that patients who took it were 84 percent more likely to develop invasive melanoma cancer. In addition, results showed that Viagra patients were nearly 50 percent more likely to develop melanoma compared to patients who did not take Viagra.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not released any labeling requirement or warning about melanoma as a possible side effect of Viagra. It has only issued a consumer safety alert regarding sildenafil citrate for children who take Revatio for pulmonary hypertension. According to the Minnesota woman, Pfizer failed to disclose the potential melanoma risk, and her husband would not have taken Viagra if he had known of the risk. She seeks restitution of Viagra profits, statutory damages, compensatory damages, and costs of litigation.
