Viagra Side Effects May Include Recurrence of Prostate Cancer

A recent study conducted by German investigators has found a possible link between the use of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) medications and higher risks of prostate cancer recurrence after a patient undergoes a prostatectomy. The new findings follow other studies suggesting Viagra side effects may also include melanoma skin cancer.

Viagra, Levitra, Cialis, and other ED medications in a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors had a significantly greater risk of causing a recurrence of prostate cancer compared to patients who did not use the drugs, according to the study.

The results were published online in September 2014 and in the February 2015 issue of The Journal of Urology. Researchers examined the relationship of biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy and the use of PDE5 inhibitors, retrospectively reviewing records of more than 4,700 patients with a median age of 65. Every patient in the study group underwent a prostatectomy between January 2000 and December 2010.

According to researchers, 86.2 percent of participants were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and nearly 25 percent of the patients reported use of Viagra or other medications for erectile dysfunction. These results suggest that prostate cancer recurrence could be a potential side effect as use of Viagra increased the risk of recurrence by as much as 38 percent. Additionally, the analysis showed no relationship between prostate cancer recurrence and smoking, body mass index, or age.
