Winter Car Crash Injures 12, Officials Say

A New Hampshire winter car crash on Friday, January 2, 2015, left 12 people injured, according to officials. The crash occurred around 10 AM as snow squalls and ice made driving dangerous.

According to police, approximately 35 vehicles were involved in two separate accidents, one of which involved a semi-truck that caught fire after a vehicle slid underneath it during the winter car crash. Witnesses say  the snow and ice caused fog-like conditions with visibility significantly reduced. The accident occurred on Interstate 93, causing the road to be closed for nearly
three hours. Police said that none of the injuries were life-threatening, but two patients remained in the hospital Friday night while another was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from Speare Memorial Hospital.

Tractor Trailer Fire

One concern with the chain-reaction winter car crash occurred was that the vehicles involved in the semi-truck collision could have exploded, leading to more serious or deadly injuries. Witnesses said people in the vehicles surrounding the semi-truck had to climb over their own vehicles and other cars to get away due to fear of an explosion. It is suspected that the combination of snow, ice and fog contributed to the accident with initial reports claiming that 50 to 100 cars were involved. One witness said she came out of a “fog of snow” and the tractor trailer accident was “right there” where she could not avoid hitting it.

Other Crashes on I-93

Winter car crashes involving multiple vehicles on I-93 in New Hampshire are not unusual, officials say. In 2009, more than a dozen people were injured in a 59-vehicle winter car crash near Derry, while five people were injured in 2012 in a 20-vehicle chain-reaction accident in New Hampton. All multiple vehicle crashes have occurred in snow and ice. Aerial footage of the semi-truck involved in the most recent crash shows boxes strewn across the icy highway.
