A driver and two of his passengers died after another driver hit their car Christmas morning in a multi-vehicle, wrong way driver crash in Seminole, Fla.
While one of the passengers of the car that was hit died at the scene, her father – the driver of the car – and her mother, also a passenger, died in hospitals following the crash.
The driver of the vehicle traveling the wrong way and another driver in a separate vehicle also were injured, according to news reports.
A similar crash also recently happened in Florida. In the early morning hours of Dec. 10, 2014, a 74-year-old man was traveling east in a 2006 Buick in the highway’s westbound lane, news reports said. He hit head-on the driver of a 2002 Ford. The Ford rolled over and struck a 2011 Jeep. The driver of the Buick died in the wrong way driver crash.
Wrong-Way Crash Statistics
According to a 2012 report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), wrong-way driver crashes account for 3% percent of accidents on highways. However, they are more likely to result in fatal or serious injuries than other types of accidents because a wrong-way driver crash is often a head-on collision. A study in Virginia quoted in the NTSB report found that wrong-way crashes have a 27 times higher fatality rate than other types of accidents. The study also found that 60% of fatal wrong-way crashes involved drivers impaired by alcohol. Drivers over the age of 70 also are over-represented in wrong-way driver crashes.
