Health Canada Says Xarelto Monitoring Will Continue

Xarelto is a commonly used blood thinner that treats and prevents blood clots and also lowers the risk of stroke in patients who have atrial fibrillation. The blood thinner has been sold in Canada since 2008. Recently, the agency completed a safety review on the drug which was aimed at looking for a potential link between Xarelto use and damage to the liver. The review did not confirm that Xarelto harmed the liver but Health Canada stated that it would continue to encourage the reporting of liver damage connected to Xarelto and it that it would continue to monitor the drug.

The review also noted that previous studies on Xarelto and liver damage were inconclusive. This is not because there was evidence to disprove the concern, but because information was missing from reports. The agency observed that there were 23 cases of liver injury reported throughout the world where the patient was only on Xarelto. There were an additional 408 cases but in those instances, patients were taking other prescription drugs, making it difficult to determine the actual cause of the damage.

Injured Patients May Be Entitled to Compensation

If a drug maker fails to fulfill its duty to provide safe drugs and to warn of potentially harmful side effects that may be associated with its medication, it could be held liable for any injuries that may result.

Patients who have been injured by Xarelto may be entitled to compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish
  • Loss of income or ability to work

If a patient dies from complications after taking Xarelto, his or her family members may be able to pursue claims for their loved one’s wrongful death. Compensation may include:

  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish from the loss of a loved one
  • Loss of financial support of a loved one
  • Funeral expenses

Affected patients are encouraged to speak with a Xarelto lawsuit attorney to learn more about their rights and remedies.
