What is Xarelto?

Xarelto, a well-known blood thinner designed to prevent strokes, has recently been linked to internal bleeding and other severe health complications. Xarelto is manufactured and marketed as a safe and effective drug designed to reduce the risk of blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, heart attacks, strokes, and death. It was first released in the U.S. in 2011 after the drug’s makers conducted a series of clinical trials.

Xarelto Litigation Overview

Claims against Bayer and Janssen allege that the companies used the results of the Einstein studies, the Record studies, and the Rocket AF study to promote the drug in commercials and on the internet, emphasizing the positive results. However, these promotional materials allegedly failed to highlight the increased risk of internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, and other bleeding complications in Xarelto patients.
Bayer and Janssen reportedly spent $11 million to promote the medication and grossed more than $582 million in sales in 2011. Xarelto patients across the U.S. claim the drug makers failed to disclose Xarelto’s anti-coagulation effects and overstated its effectiveness. The plaintiff in the recently filed Xarelto lawsuit is seeking over $4.35 million in damages.

In 2012, approximately 2,081 adverse event reports were submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration involving Xarelto, and 151 of those involved the death of a patient. Those pursuing claims for Xarelto bleeding allege they suffered from severe personal injuries, including a diminished enjoyment of life, mental anguish, physical pain, lost earnings, and incurred medical costs.

Claimants also allege the manufacturers’ negligence caused the resulting internal bleeding injuries that the companies failed to investigate and fully define Xarelto’s safety and effectiveness and that they failed to provide adequate warnings to both the public and healthcare communities. Other allegations include claims of strict products liability, fraudulent misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, common law fraud, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

If you have experienced rectal bleeding, brain hemorrhaging, intestinal bleeding, or lost a loved one due to bleeding complications that may have been caused by the use of Xarelto, you should consider seeking legal counsel While adverse complications that can be caused by other blood thinners such as warfarin can be reversed with a shot of vitamin K or other antidote, there is presently no known antidote for Xarelto.
