Zofran Birth Defect Lawyers Note 200 Suspected Links Between Zofran And Birth Defects

According to Parenting.com, many of the lawsuits filed against Zofran manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline allege that the company failed to relay critical findings about the drug’s effects to members of the medical community so that patients could be properly warned of its risks. One suit alleges that the drug maker was aware of an animal study that showed evidence of Zofran’s active ingredient causing severe malformations in embryos after it crossed the mother’s placenta.

Another lawsuit alleges that GlaxoSmithKline received at least 200 reports indicating a link between Zofran and birth defects since the year 2000. The suits also allege that before the year 2000, at least 32 reports of serious birth defects attributed to Zofran were submitted to GlaxoSmithKline. Victims claim that this is further evidence that the drug maker was allegedly aware of Zofran’s propensity for causing serious health complications.

The four studies, involving babies exposed to Zofran in utero, indicate a link between a child’s exposure to the drug while in utero and a variety of serious conditions and birth defects, among them cardiovascular defects, preterm birth and cleft palate, the website reported.

Affected Families May Be Entitled to Compensation

Drug makers have a duty to provide safe drugs. If there are risks of harm associated with their drugs, they also must provide adequate warnings. If a drug maker fails to fulfill this duty, it could be held liable in lawsuits for injuries that may result.

The parents of children who were born with birth defects linked to Zofran may be entitled to compensation for damages, including the child’s:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish
  • Scarring or physical deformities caused by the birth defect or treatment

If a child died due to birth defects linked to Zofran, family members may be entitled to compensation for the wrongful death of their loved one, including:

  • Conscious pain and suffering of their child prior to death
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish from the loss of a child
  • Funeral expenses

Affected families are encouraged to seek the advice of a Zofran lawsuit attorney to learn more about their rights and remedies.
