Lawsuit: Hospital Staff Failed to Address Complications During Boy’s Birth

It took a jury just four hours to award a young man and his mother $53 million, $28.8 million of which is intended to be used for future caretaking expenses. According to the Chicago Tribune, the boy suffered severe, life-altering brain damage as a result of about 20 errors made by the staff at the University of Chicago Medical Center after his mother was admitted at 40 weeks pregnant.

According to the lawsuit, doctors and nurses at the facility failed to perform a cesarean section in a timely manner and failed to appropriately monitor the mother and baby despite the mother’s claims the baby wasn’t moving. Furthermore, the plaintiffs’ legal team claimed the care providers failed to properly address changes in the fetus’s heart rate prior to birth and failed to follow an appropriate chain of command, among other allegations.
