Warfarin, Pradaxa Side Effects Compared in 2014 Study

Pradaxa, manufactured and marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, is a blood thinner that has been linked in studies to an increased risk of internal bleeding. Pradaxa lawsuits have been filed alleging that the drug caused severe internal bleeding and in some cases, death. A study published in October 2014 in the American Heart Association journal, Circulation, investigated the differences in Pradaxa side effects and that of an older anticoagulant known as warfarin.

Pradaxa Side Effects May Include Gastrointestinal Bleeding

The study published in October 2014 followed more than 134,000 elderly Medicare patients from October 2010 through December 2012. Results showed that patients who took two 150-milligram doses of Pradaxa daily had less risk of intracranial hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, and death than those who took warfarin. However, these same patients were also more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal bleeding compared to those who took warfarin. The results were reportedly similar in patients who took two 75-milligram doses twice per day, except for a reduced risk of intracranial hemorrhage in Pradaxa patients.

A second study published in January 2015 in JAMA Internal Medicine examined Medicare data from 8,100 warfarin patients and 1,300 Pradaxa patients between 2010 and 2011. Results showed an increased risk of any bleeding event in Pradaxa patients as well as an 85 percent increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
