Hazardous Chemicals Force Evacuations, Sends Residents to the Hospital
The CSX train derailment, which occurred around midnight in Blount County near Maryville, caused one car carrying hazardous materials to ignite. Fumes from the fire forced the evacuation of 5,000 people and sent at least 25 people to the hospital with respiratory issues.
According to Reuters news:
Firefighters were allowing the blaze to burn itself out on the advice of specialists, as attempts to extinguish it could be hazardous, Blount County firefighter Kermit Easterling said. CSX said at 3:30 p.m. that the tank car continued to burn, making it unsafe to establish any transfer operations.
Blount County has urban and rural areas and is home to part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Easterling said.
Reuters reports that the Tennessee train accident comes on the heels of other recent U.S. train accidents. Attorneys have previously noted the derailment of another CSX train in West Virginia in February 2015 resulted in the evacuation of approximately 1,000 residents.
