Studies Show Testosterone Risks Include Heart Attack, Stroke

Following two separate studies that showed men were at an increased risk of heart-related complications while taking prescription testosterone drugs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began to investigate potential testosterone risks of heart attack and stroke in 2014. More than 1,300 men who took testosterone replacement drugs are pursuing claims for compensation against seven different companies in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois.

Testosterone Allegedly Marketed for Unapproved Purpose

Testosterone drugs such as Fortesta, Axiron, and AndroGel are approved to be prescribed to men with low testosterone levels caused by a medical condition. More than 2.3 million prescriptions were written to men across the U.S. in 2013, according to the FDA. However, many prescriptions are reportedly written to treat low testosterone levels brought on by aging, a purpose not approved by the FDA as of April 2015.

A PLOS One study published in 2014 showed that in the first three months of testosterone drug use in younger men with a history of cardiovascular disease and in men over the age of 65, the risk of heart attack nearly doubled. The FDA issued a safety communication in March 2015, requiring testosterone drug makers to update the warning labels on their products to include testosterone risks of heart attack and stroke.

Injured Patients May Be Eligible for Compensation

Patients who have been injured by testosterone drugs may be entitled to compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Family members of those who died after using testosterone drugs may be able to pursue claims for the wrongful death of their loved one.
