Our attorneys can also discuss claims against Lipitor causing diabetes, Januvia causing pancreatic cancer or thyroid cancer, and many other bad drugs that are harming consumers. Consumers should be able to believe that the medications that they are prescribed will help them manage the condition for which they are intended to treat. Unfortunately, however, these drugs, which are often created by manufacturers who claim they will be beneficial to patients, often do more harm than good.
Patients who are suffering from serious, adverse side effects are filing lawsuits against the manufacturers of defective and dangerous drugs, alleging that the manufacturers knew about the risks and dangers of the medications that they are producing. However, since these dangerous medications are raking in millions upon millions of dollars for these companies, the manufacturers may be more inclined to turn a blind eye upon the consumer. This deadly cycle of a “bad drug” can be demonstrated by the following dramatization.
The Deadly Cycle
A young woman with healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle is prescribed Lipitor to help manage her cholesterol. Lipitor, a statin drug manufactured by Pfizer, was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. It is one of the top-selling drugs in the world, but it has also been known to cause side effects such as liver and kidney failure, heart attacks and cognitive damage. Studies have shown that those who take this medication may be 12 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes; nevertheless, the drug has grossed over $125 billion in sales.

After a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, this young woman’s physician decides to prescribe Actos, a medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals that was approved by the FDA in 1992. The drug was originally touted as a “wonder drug” for those struggling with the condition, and the manufacturer promised little to no side effects. However, in 2012, physicians strongly agreed that Actos was a bad drug and that both name brand and generic forms should only be used as a last resort. Patients experienced:
– Bladder cancer – Congestive heart failure – Lactic acidosis – Urinary tract infection – Low blood sugar – Allergic reaction – Sore throat – Upper respiratory infection – Limb, muscle and tooth pain – Malaise
The FDA requested that Takeda update the warning label in June 2011 to reflect the results of a 10-year-long study that reported that patients taking Actos have a 40 percent higher chance of receiving a bladder cancer diagnosis following 12 months of usage. Unfortunately, the young woman had been taking the drug for years before she finds out about the increased risk, and now it is too late.
What Constitutes a Bad Drug?
While a bad drug may be helpful many patients, others suffer serious, life-threatening conditions due to the defective and unreasonably dangerous qualities of the drug. Well-known medications such as Victoza, Bydureon, Byetta, Januvia and Janumet may cause cancer, while GranuFlo has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks.
Although these drugs may be the best-selling in their class, it does not always mean that they are safe. A physician, with no information from the manufacturer, may prescribe a drug thinking that it will ease the patient’s suffering, only to find out months or years down the road that long-term use may lead to an increased risk of developing cancer or other diseases. Oftentimes, these side effects may go unnoticed for an extended period of time because the manufacturer has invested time and money into placing the drug on the market; once the manufacturer sees an influx of sales and the money starts rolling in, they may be less likely to speak out about the potential risks that can come from taking the medications.
