Those who have been allegedly injured while taking Pradaxa may consider filing a Pradaxa lawsuit with the help of experienced attorneys to seek compensation for their injuries. According to court documents, there are now over 100 pending lawsuits from plaintiffs that allege the medication caused cerebral hemorrhaging and gastrointestinal bleeding, among other complications. Attorneys expect that more individuals will come forward to file a Pradaxa lawsuit in the next several months.
Have you or someone you love suffered from severe bleeding or other side effects while taking Pradaxa? You may consider seeking legal counsel from experienced attorneys to file a Pradaxa lawsuit and seek compensation for your injuries.
Background of Pradaxa
Pradaxa was initially introduced to the market in 2010 as a medication designed to prevent strokes in individuals diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. According to the medication’s label, it was also to be used to prevent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in those undergoing hip replacement procedures and knee surgeries. Several physicians have acknowledged prescribing Pradaxa to reduce the risk of potentially dangerous blood clots forming, traveling to the brain and causing strokes.
While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted a possible relationship between the medication and an increased risk of internal bleeding, the agency asserts that the medication is not any more dangerous than other blood thinners.
Health Risks and Side Effects
Those filing Pradaxa lawsuits allege that the medication can increase a patient’s risk of internal bleeding due to Pradaxa’s ability to prevent the formation of clots in patients. While other similar blood thinners also cause these side effects, Pradaxa is allegedly worse because the manufacturers have not released an antidote to counteract the effects of the medication in emergencies.
Have you or a loved one experienced one or more of the following symptoms of internal bleeding? You may be entitled to file your own claim and seek compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages and medical expenses:
- Easy or unusual bruising
- Bleeding from gums or cuts for an extended period of time
- Frequent or prolonged nosebleeds
- Bloody vomit
- Coffee ground-colored vomit
- Pink or dark urine
- Persistent or unusual tiredness or weakness
- Headaches, fainting, dizziness
- Black, tarry or bloody stools
The FDA has also stated that 542 patients have died while taking the medication. Although one of the main allegations in pending lawsuits is internal bleeding, patients also reported other adverse side effects including:
- Abdominal discomfort or pain
- Gastrointestinal ulcers
- GERD
- Vomiting, nausea
- Heartburn
Pending Pradaxa Lawsuits
Since a preliminary hearing took place on October 3, 2012, pending lawsuits across the country have been consolidated into one court. According to reports, a judge has scheduled five bellwether trials slated to start in August 2014, September 2014, November 2014, January 2015 and February 2015.
Bellwether trials are imperative in cases in which there are an increasing number of claims as they provide a chance for both the defendants and the plaintiffs to predict how future claims may be settled. If, for example, a defendant sees that the court is siding with plaintiffs, the company or manufacturer may make the decision to settle future claims outside of court.
