Pradaxa and Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding risks were compared to a more traditional blood thinner, warfarin, in a study published in the April 24, 2015 edition of the British Medical Journal. Results showed that Xarelto may double a patient’s risk of gastrointestinal bleeding compared to warfarin, and that Pradaxa may increase the risk by 50% over warfarin. Xarelto lawsuits have been filed that allege the drug maker failed to disclose risks of severe bleeding complications.

Xarelto, Pradaxa Promoted as Convenient; Lack Approved Antidote
The April 24 study involved more than 46,000 patients who took warfarin, Pradaxa, or Xarelto between October 2012 and March 2013. The research was designed to investigate ongoing issues with newer blood thinners and compare them to conventional treatments. While warfarin has been used for many years to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, Pradaxa and Xarelto have been promoted as more convenient and better options for patients with the same condition. However, these newer medications have been linked in studies to an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Whereas the blood thinning effect of warfarin can be reversed through a vitamin K injection, antidotes that could potentially stop a Pradaxa or Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding event have not been approved to date. Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding and other kinds of bleeding complications are alleged in lawsuits filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, and the maker of Pradaxa, Boehringer Ingelheim has been named in thousands of lawsuits with similar allegations.
Injured Patients May be Entitled to Compensation
People who have been injured by Xarelto or Pradaxa may be entitled to compensation from the party responsible. Compensation can be based on a number of factors, including past and future medical expenses, and past and future pain, suffering, and mental anguish.
If a loved one is killed, family members may be entitled to recover wrongful death damages, including:
- Loss of relationship with the loved one
- Loss of financial support
- Funeral expenses
- Conscious pain and suffering of the loved one prior to death
- Medical expenses attributable to the fatal injury
