What is Risperdal?

Risperdal, or risperidone, is used mainly to treat irritability in those with autism, the mixed and manic states associated with bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia, including adolescent schizophrenia. However, the use of the medication, particularly in young men, has been linked to gynecomastia, a condition in which males develop enlarged breast tissues. Although the condition is non-cancerous, the growth of breasts in males can cause lasting psycho-social harm due to severe embarrassment, and surgery may be required to correct the condition.

Claim: Risks Withheld From Doctors and Patients

Patients filing a Risperdal lawsuit claim that the drug maker failed to disclose information relating to side effects, particularly the risk of gynecomastia. Plaintiff claim that the risks of the drug were misrepresented, and that had they been given full information about the drug they would not have chosen to take it. In 2012, drug maker Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay over $2 billion to the federal government to settle claims that it illegally marketed Risperdal and other drugs.

Affected Patients May Be Entitled to Compensation

It is the duty of drug makers to provide safe drugs, and to warn of any risks that may be associated with them. If a drug maker fails to fulfill that duty, it could be held liable for injuries to patients that may result. Patients who are affected by Risperdal may be entitled to compensation for damages, including medical expenses, as well as for any pain, suffering or mental anguish experienced as a result of adverse side effects.
